We have A LOT to celebrate today! With 3 things happening on the same day, it’s going to be fun! LOL! 

What is a “celebration” without food? So, a great way to celebrate “National Day of Pi” is to bake or buy some of your favorites! But, the best way to get rid of all of that pie is 

to have some guests over to celebrate!

“National day of napping”  is due to the fact that we just ‘pushed’ the clocks forward 1 hour because of the ‘daylight savings time’! We might be a bit sluggish today. But, we are still going to try to get things done. (Especially if we take a nap!)

And probably my favorite, “National write your story day”! This is a great day to start working on YOUR story. What do you want  people to know about YOU? When you are gone, what do you want YOUR legacy to be? 

Let’s get started! Eat some pie, take a nap and start writing your story!

Ides of March Prompts

If you are a reader of Shakespeare plays (as you should be…) you know that a warning was given to Julius Caesar concerning March 15th (the day he was assassinated!)  This saying has been adapted to other ‘warnings’.  It could be a warning about debt, someone you don’t actually want to see is coming for a visit, or just upcoming doom! But, you don’t have to worry.  Although there have been some historical things that have happened on March 15th, there is no need to ‘beware’! It’s all good!

This is a GREAT day for people who like to talk…lol! (You can DEFINITELY write on this day, too!) This is a day where you share information…in detail! A day where you can be open with everyone around you. If you are a person who doesn't like to hear what people have to say, then— I don’t know what to tell you…lol! You are probably going to have to go into hiding until tomorrow…lol! This is a day to talk freely, share openly and feel free to say what you have to say. This can definitely be converted into writing. I think that that’s what we should do!

Today is St. Patrick’s Day! This is a very important day for me and my heritage. I always remember what my late father, Mr. Samuel J Cubbage, Sr told me. He said, “Son, the last name ‘Cubbage” is an Irish last name. It comes from many name variations.” My dad also let me know that my people are from a town in Ireland called “County Down.” St. Patrick’s Day is when everyone gets together, socializing, having a cold beer (usually green for the occasion) and just having fun. Many people parade the streets and towns, wearing a sea of green. But, did you know that orange is also a color that can be worn on this day? If you don’t know the true meaning of St. Patrick’s Day or the history of St. Patrick himself, look it up. It might surprise you. For anyone looking to start writing about today, go for it! Have fun!

Bobbie D. What does THAT mean? Well, when you begin to write your “Great American Novel”, you want to make sure that your story is interesting. What I mean is… whatever you are interested in, write about it! If you are interested in horseback riding, and you know a lot about it; you’re passionate about it, write about it! And the more interested you are in ‘horseback riding’ the more interesting it will be to your readers. This will give you longevity in the writing world. And that’s what it’s all about, right?

One of the things I like to stress to new writers (and experienced writers) is editing your work. It is SOOO important that YOU have a hand in editing your own words. How can someone else tell you what you were thinking when you were writing your piece? So, I’m always saying something about making sure that you have a hand in dieting your work. But, another important thing that you need to do is make sure that when you are hit with writer’s block, don’t fret.  Put your writing aside for a little while and let it rest. When you come back to it, you’ll find that you are brimming with new, and fresh ideas! So, come on. Give your writing a little break. Feel free to work on something else.

Make a List of Your Writing/ Grammar Mistakes

When you become a writer, whether you’ve taken writing classes or not, you may believe that you don’t make any mistakes. You are writing and writing and writing, and you can’t find a single, solitary thing wrong with what you’ve written. BUT, you have. Misspelled words, grammar is all over the place, punctuation is a mess.... I’ve seen it! I’ve also seen people try to correct the ‘writer’.. And the ‘writer’ gets VERY offended. No matter how gentle the person correcting them is. So, this is going to be a suggestion for you. Before you put your writings out in ‘the world”, read your writings. REALLY read it. And see if you can find any mistakes. Then, have someone that you REALLY trust, and have them critique it. When you are putting your writings out on display, you HAVE to be ready for what people have to say. (People ALWAYS have something to say.) So, you MUST grow a ‘thick skin’ to it. Try not to be offended.

Mothers Day was Yesterday

Happy belated Mothers Day to all of the amazing mothers and caregivers out there; what you do is beyond price. Thank you for loving us. 

I'm so thankful for the mothers in my life. Like my own mother. She worked a full time job as a teacher; and came home to deal with more children. That must have been hard. Our family is blessed to have her.

When I got married, I acquired a mother in law. She also worked hard to raise her son, and put in many years working as a printer. So many people have sacrificed for the betterment of their families. We should dedicate more than one day to these amazing mothers. 

Write a beautiful note to her as often as you can. It will show her that you honor her not only on a 'special' day. But, every day. 

You MUST Keep Your Day Job

Many new writers make this mistake. Heck, many "seasoned writers" make this mistake.  "I'm about to sell a  million units! I can't be bothered with this job!" Unfortunately, this WILL NOT happen.  But, I’ve always been a big believer in maintaining a day job. You MUST pay the bills. But, you can maintain a day job, or jobs and do something you LOVE on the side. Dropping your day job to write a book can sometimes lead to a worst-case scenario. Debt, financial worries and what's worse, you could find that your first book may not be the one to start your career as a working writer.

So, until you can make SURE that this is making a real financial difference in your wallet...or, it's making you enough money that working your day job is getting in the way? Keep that job!

I don't  know how many times I've said that I enjoy writing nonfiction--Because for me, it's what I like writing about (and reading) the most! But, writing nonfiction may not be your 'thing'. And that's okay. However, to continue to hone your skills, you MUST practice; practice, practice! So, try dabbling in writing something outside of your comfort zone. I've written 3 cookbooks; even though I LOVE nonfiction! Bit, should I not write cookbooks because I love nonfiction? Absolutely not!

That's the difference between a GOOD writer, and one of the GREATEST! It will truly make a difference.

Successful Book Signing Events

Happy Monday! I had the opportunity to go to a book signing with my BFF, this weekend. I have been to book signings in the past. But, this one was very memorable. So, I was thinking about some tips for a successful book signing!

This book is about women in animal wildlife research. So, the author had the signing at a nature reserve. That is a FABULOUS idea! (Her book is about animal wildlife, and her venue was a nature reserve.) 

The event was from 1-3pm. She started on time. VERY important. Time is important to everyone. She began on time and ended before 3pm. She showed respect for everyone’s time.

She even read a few paragraphs from the book AND did a question and answer period afterwards. 

And she had just the right amount of books available for purchase. She was nice, personable, and even took pictures with those who wanted to.

So, when you are ready to do a book signing, keep these things in mind. It will assure that you have a successful event!

How to Write a Cookbook

Sometimes people ask me, “How do you write a cookbook?” I can give you some ways that I wrote MY cookbooks. But, you have to do what you like.

1. You MUST cook the recipes that you are putting in your book. This is a must! If you put a recipe out there that isn’t good….it looks bad on you.
2. You MUST have ALL of the ingredients AND directions available. That includes the proper amounts of ingredients used in each recipe. VERY IMPORTANT.
3. Take and choose beautiful pictures! (Especially for the cover!) What makes you buy a cookbook…the cover! Pick the BEST picture for your cover. And make sure that THAT recipe is in the book!
4. And make sure that you break things down in the table of contents.

Line Editing

"Line editing". What in the world does that mean? Well, it's similar to copy editing, except you have to be RAZOR SHARP FOCUSED on each line of the text. Which is a little different from the standard copy editing–which means editing an overall piece of work.

You can find people who will do this for you for a fee. Or, you can work on doing this yourself. I truly believe that you can become an even better writer if you work on the mechanics of writing.

Give it a try! It surely wouldn’t hurt.

Magazine Writing Tips

Are your writing abilities leading you toward magazine article writing? If so, that’s a great way to break into the business! And…that’s a great way to do it quickly. Below are a few tips to get you started in writing for magazines!

1. Write about something that you are an expert in. If you know about strawberry picking, that’s what you send in to the magazine editor. There’s no reason to write about something that you don’t know about. No one will take you seriously.
2. Style guides are your BEST friend. When writing for any type of publication, having the latest style guide around would be extremely helpful. Google ‘style writing guides’, and check out the one that’s best for you!
3. Structure! So many people who believe they can write, jump out there and they miss the MOST important thing….STRUCTURE! If there is no structure to your writing, people will know RIGHT AWAY…and they will stop. Just like that. (That’s what I do.)

Fathers Day Prompts

Character Arc

What is a character arc? It’s the journey that a character takes over the course of a story. It involves the changes in the character that leads them to the resolution at the end of the story. Here are some ways that YOU can create a character acr for characters in YOUR writings.

1. WHO is your main character? What are they like?
2. WHAT scenarios do they find themselves in?
3. Does your character have a superpower? If so, what is it?
4. Does your character have a fatal flaw? What is it?
5. WHAT can you do to make your character reveal themselves toward the end of your story?

This is a good start. Work hard. Write a story that you would want to read; and don’t give up!

Parents Anniversary Prompts

Yesterday, we celebrated my parent 57th wedding anniversary! That is a long time to love someone; to share with someone. To travel down the same life path together. I am so proud and honored to have these two as my parents! With that being said, I thought that this would be a great day to do some “Parents Anniversary Prompts”!

Roe v. Wade

As I’m sure you know, Roe v Wade was overturned last week. A landmark decision that has been there for almost 50 years.

No matter what your opinion is on this issue, remember that if you were on the other side, how would YOU feel? I have seen a LOT of unkind things happening. This is not a time to be unkind. It IS a time to be understanding, caring and compassionate. Is this world so messed up that the only way that things are ‘okay’ is if you are ‘winning’ and GLOATING about your win? I think not. It’s a sad day for OUR country, when mothers and daughters are FIGHTING over this issue. Whether you have opposing views, this behavior isn’t right.

I think that this would be a good time to write about this history making decision. Write your feelings; listen to others. Be objective. Be kind. BE EMPATHIC. In other words..be a part of the HUMAN race. 

Black Music Month

We know that Black Music permeates our daily lives; as it should. But, the month of June is when we uplift this section of music. Black Music Month is EVERY month. Since we are closing out the month, I have a few Indie artists that I would like for you to check out. 

Music writing is a difficult thing to do. You have to be inspired by something, have the right words for what you are trying to say. And find a way to say it by uplifting someone’s spirit. God bless those who can do it!

If you are an aspiring songwriter, look to these Indie artists; they will lift your spirits and inspire your creativity. 

1. FEGS- Fegs (Forever God’s Son) is a Nigerian artist out of London. He just dropped new music this past Friday! Fegs can be found on ALL social media platforms. (His management team- Music Birthed Out of the Spirit– Has a YouTube Channel.)
2. CHAR- Char is a Jamaican Artist out of Chicago. She has LOTS of music, for every taste. She also has a WONDERFUL YouTube show called, “Adult Conversations with CHAR”!
3. Terisa Griffin– Terisa is a hometown lady from Louisiana, out of Chicago. She has SO much AMAZING music; you can’t pick just one! Pride Month

This month is also, “PRIDE MONTH!” And in the spirit of Pride Month, we would like to remind you that who you love is up to you. We have no right to dictate who you love. Regardless of who it is. Only GOD can judge.  We must remember the bible verse that comes from Saint Matthew. “Do not judge, or you too, will be judged.” Matthew 7:1.

People have the right to live out loud. You do. Remember that.

When you are trying to become a ‘writer’, you forget that there are sooo many types of writing. One form of writing is “Church Writing”. When I say, “Church Writing”, I mean sermons, newsletters, bulletins, social media, etc. There is a LOT of writing in the church. 

If you feel that you want to get a jumpstart to your writing experience, ask the head of your church if you could start a newsletter. Maybe you can start a social media ministry in your church. (We did). You can even help with the bulletins!  Do what you can to get some solid experience. It will help you in the long run.

Apostrophes? Huh?

I know you see it. It bugs me! Does it bug you? We see it on social media ALL the time; friends and family using the "apostrophe" WRONG!!!

I just HAVE to say this, when you are writing something, ANYTHING that will be read by ANYONE other than YOU, please CHECK first! Then, check again. Then, check ONE MORE TIME....

I've noticed that when people are writing their posts on social media, they have been using the apostrophe like so.....

"We had a great day out and about today! Here is a picture of us; the Cubbage's!" I'm sorry. This is NOT grammatically correct. If I am talking about one person in the Cubbage family, that would be fine. For example, "I gave Mrs. Cubbage's gift to her husband." THAT is correct. But, if we are talking about the Cubbage family, you would say, "I have a gift for the Cubbages."

I hope that this can clear things up. If you have ANY questions on HOW to use the apostrophe, feel free to ask someone. And if you don't have anyone to ask, ask ME! I'm happy to help. PLEASE!! I REALLY CAN HELP!

As the pandemic continues to have its way with the human race, so many of us haven't traveled. However, there are some who are brave enough to take the risk and continue to travel. 

Unfortunately, the last time we traveled was in 2019…and probably the worst trip we'd ever been on. However, it sparked a few funny and snarky jokes between us. 

As I think about traveling, I thought that it would be a great opportunity to work on some "Traveling Prompts"!

Becoming a  Fitness Writer

You’ve decided that you want to write about fitness. That’s great! How do you get started? Well, there are a few things that you need to know before you get started. 

1. You don’t have to be, but you SHOULD have some background in sports and fitness. That way, you sound more credible. However, that’s obvious; and is the same with just about anything. I’m not EXACTLY comfortable with someone who writes about cooking, and doesn’t have any experience in the subject. That’s just me….and a LOT of others. 

So, make sure that you have at least a  little bit of a background in health, sports and/or fitness.

1. Check out your favorite sports and fitness writers. 
2. Make sure that you get some experience. Try to join a fitness club, athletic club or team. (Even if you can be a part of the staff. That would be helpful.)

 
The world is yours; you can do anything you want to do! Everything is open to you. Go for it!

Back to School is on the Way!

Yes! Summer camps are ending soon, and school is about to begin. Our children are about to be knee-deep in learning, reading books, working on papers and everything school related. 

With that being said, you and your family will be headed back into that “school routine”. Whatever that looks like to you, make sure that you continue to find that balance. It is VERY important. Things that are important to you, like your writing, should have a place in your life. Make time for it. If it’s something that you enjoy, you MUST do it. No matter what.

As we enter into the Fall/Winter months, you will (most likely) be spending more time indoors. So, you must do what you need to do to keep up with your writing. I know that you are close. Keep pushing. Keep going. Keep writing!

Finding Balance in Writing

In this post-pandemic world (well, almost), we, as writers, have to find a way to balance our time– so we can write. I would like to suggest writing a few minutes a day; it doesn’t have to be the WHOLE day. It can be 20 minutes everyday. Setting small goals will get you to the finish line, too! And it will put a lot less pressure on you. If you are sitting at the park, pull out a pen and paper (yes! Go old school) and write. Take a few minutes out of your day to get it done. ANd you will find that you have a nice collection of writings. Give it a try!

Give your mind a mental break...and do nothing. Sit in a quiet place, take a walk, doodle, change your location. Whatever it is that YOU can do to get your creative juices flowing, do it!!

As a little girl, I started keeping notebooks, journals, and diaries of written events that have happened in my life. From my first day of grade school, to my first crush. Even on my wedding day! All of these little, beautiful pieces of paper; reams and reams of paper; notebooks, journals and diaries - all make up the events and times in my life. All of these fabulous little minuets have  made it to some piece of  paper. For me, the reason why I write is to have a record of the amazing times in my life. Happy or sad, winning or losing, I've written about it all.

For MOST of my stories, I have a lot of thoughts about the story, before I start writing it. When I didn’t have time to devote to writing, these stories would be running around in my head! With no place to go, but in the abyss of the outer recesses of my mind! (And to be honest, that's a shame. When you feel like you have a story to tell, you want to get it out right away! And if you have all of these images of characters, places, things etc, running around in your mind, they'll get lost...). 

A great thing to get used to doing is keeping a voice recorder or use the voice note function on a smartphone to record ideas or sentences for your story. This will help you to keep creating content, even when you have less time to sit down and write.

Do you want to know when you’re headed in the right direction? For many writers I’ve talked to, the answer seems to be, "Reading my words out loud."

Some writers say that during the process of writing their books, explain that sound shows them where the energy is, what parts of the story are important, and what should follow along after. It can help with revision, too. Many drafts in, when you can no longer see the work with fresh eyes, you can rely on your voice. There may be parts that you don't want to read; Those are the weak parts. It's going to be difficult. But, in the end, it's worth it!

Some of the mistakes that NEW writers make is that they haven't figured out HOW to begin. So, here are a few tips on HOW to get started!

1. Write appealing titles-- Think about the things that YOU like to read. What TITLES have caught your eye? Think of those titles; don't COPY them! You could get into a WORLD of trouble for doing that. But, use those titles as inspiration for YOUR OWN titles.

2. Be consistent in your writing-- I know. Easy to say, hard to do! But, if you can write a few hundred words a day....you will be golden!

3. Enjoy writing-- If you want to BE a writer, you HAVE to not only do A LOT of reading, you HAVE to LIKE writing. It sounds crazy....lol! But, it's true! So, keep writing. Write down your thoughts, write lists, write things that you'd like to remember. And soon you will have a BUNCH of writings all over the place!

4. Believe in yourself-- You HAVE to believe in yourself. Writing has a lot of up and downs, new challenges, writers' block, etc. But, if you keep on working, keep on writing, do some blogging... And BELIEVE that you can do it, you will! It's easy to doubt yourself; in fact, expect it. But, NEVER let self doubt overwhelm you. You can do this!

So, you’ve decided that you want to write about fitness. That’s good! And now, you want to know how to get started. Well, there are a few things that you need to know before you get started. 

You don’t have to be, but you SHOULD have some background in sports and fitness. That way, you sound more credible. However, that’s obvious; and is the same with just about anything. I’m not EXACTLY comfortable with someone who writes about being a doctor, and doesn’t have any background in medicine. 

So, make sure that you have a little background in health, sports and/or fitness.

Check out your favorite sports and fitness writers. 

Make sure that you get some experience. Try to join a club or team. (Even if you can be a part of the staff. That would be helpful.)

The world is your oyster; you can do anything you want to do! Go for it!

Being a publisher, we are in constant contact with literary agents. And believe it or not, there are some things that agents told them that they are looking for in a potential client. He is a list of things that literary agents are looking for in a potential client.

1. Is the person/author easy to work with? In this business, your reputation precedes you. If you have had trouble in the past with a publisher or an agent, trust me, they know…and we talk…. So, do what you can to be kind, confident and helpful. No one wants to work with someone who is labeled as ‘trouble’.
2. A professional attitude– which you can refer to the first tip.
3. Diversity– a BIG thing in 2022.

It is very important that we hold on to the truths that we hold dear; the reason for the United States breaking away from the monarchy was to have the opportunity to build a "more perfect union." When YOU look at the world, how do YOU see it? The pandemic is not over. But, it’s better than it was a year ago. Do you agree? Dissagree?
A great way that you can practice writing-- in your head is to think about the world around you; and how you would describe it. This can help you learn how to craft your words in a beautiful fashion; while also being different, amazing and interesting to your readers.
Look out of your window, RIGHT NOW. What do you see? Describe it; the color, the shapes, etc.
If you can just practice describing the things in YOUR world, you are well on your way! 

'Strong' Language...

Uh, uh, uh. It's NOT what you think...lol!! No. We are NOT going to talk about language that's 'filthy'. We are talking about eliminating weak language from our manuscripts. Things like weak verbs and passive voices. 

Take a LONG look at your manuscript. See if you notice phrases like, "She jumped into bed." 'Jumped' is a weak word. Think of something more exciting! Like, "She LEAPED into bed." There's a bit more power behind that statement.

Continue to work on your manuscript; continue to make draft, after draft, after draft. And soon, your manuscript will be ready for the final draft. (And then, check, check and check again!) It's a lot of work. But, it's worth it!

Happy Thanksgiving!!! Even though it's the start of the holiday season, there is no reason why you can't work (a little) on your writing!
 
One of the best ways to strengthen your writing ability is thinking about how you can describe 'everyday' things in exciting, new ways.
Pause when you’re describing something while writing-- and think, “What else can I say to explain this situation, and create a more emotional impact?
For example-- “The Thanksgiving turkey was hot. But, we ate it." It's not a bad way to describe a Thanksgiving turkey.  But, it can be described in a more appetizing way.
Like this-- "As mom pulled the Thanksgiving turkey, gently out of the oven,  the aroma of the turkey wafted lightly around the room. As mom set the tasty bird in the center of the beautifully, adorned table, I noticed that the turkey was hot.  As we bowed our heads to give thanks, each family member spoke about what they were thankful for. When we were finished giving thanks, we added all of the delicious 
food to our dinner plates and enjoyed eating the very tasty turkey."
This is relatively saying the same thing, but in a way that stops and makes your readers think and  appreciate the way in which it was constructed. 
 
Work hard on describing the world around you; look deeper. You'll find it!
 

The Importance of Reading a lot to Achieve Your Writing Goals

"Reading a lot".... it's easier said than done. Well, then--- how can I make it happen? Well, if your life is as busy as mine is, these are some surefire ways to get you to that reading goal! 

1. Break it down by the month- Set a goal of a certain amount of books that you would like to read---BUT, ONLY for that month. You will find that you will get to your reading goal in no time!

2. If you are awake while the family is sleeping, take that quiet time and read-- YES! This is the BEST time to get some reading done. We all have someone in the family that has A LOT to say...especially when you NEED to focus on something. Lol! So, if by chance they fall asleep before you do, here's your chance! While they are in a peaceful slumber, you can get that reading done!

3. While you are on breaks-- I know, I know. Most of us are back to the office and enjoying the time, talking to coworkers again.. So, if you can sneak away and take a 15 minute break--ALONE--- you will get that reading goal for the month, chopped down.

Just take your time; and take the chances that you are given to get that reading taken care of!

Apostrophes.... What are they? What is their purpose?

So, there is an elephant in the room....I know YOU see it. And as a WRITER, I KNOW it REALLY gets to you, huh? We see it on social media ALL the time; friends and family using the "apostrophe" WRONG!!!

I just HAVE to say this, when you are writing something, ANYTHING that will be read by ANYONE other than YOU, please CHECK first! Then, check again. Then, check ONE MORE TIME....

I've noticed that when people are writing their posts on social media, they have been using the apostrophe like so.....

"We had a great day out and about today! Here is a picture of us; the Cubbage's!" I'm sorry. This is NOT grammatically correct. If I am talking about one person in the Cubbage family, that would be fine. For example, "I gave Mrs. Cubbage's gift to her husband." THAT is correct. But, if we are talking about the Cubbage family, you would say, "I have a gift for the Cubbages."

I hope that this can clear things up. If you have ANY questions on HOW to use the apostrophe, feel free to ask someone. And if you don't have anyone to ask, ask ME! I'm happy to help.

There are many secrets to writing; secrets that will take a lifetime to get through...lol! But, there are so many things that you need to know, so you can look your best! 

If you consider yourself to be an  ADVANCED WRITER, there are things that you may want to check about your writing...just to make SURE that you are where you THINK you are.

1.  Parallel Construction

2.  Avoid WEAK  words 

3. Avoid Dangling Modifiers

4. Avoid being redundant

5. Make pronouns clear

6. Works on the length of your sentences

7. Do NOT over use parenthesis

If you can look at your work and see that you have done/ or not done thee things, all is well. You ARE an ADVANCED WRITER! Congratulations!

Holiday writing time organized...

‘Tis the season to be... productive. With the hustle and bustle of the appending holiday season, it can be easy to push aside your writings, and focus on the hoopla of the season.

But with strategic planning to your writing routine, you can have the best of both worlds: enjoy your friends and family, and keep a steady writing routine. If you have a busy holiday schedule, there are a few things that you can do to stay  'in the spirit' AND get things done!

1. Create holiday writing (daily) goals-- If you tell yourself that you are going to write 5,000 words, each day of the holiday season, then STICK TO IT. Don't give yourself a 'pass' because it's the holidays. JUST DO IT.

2. Write in the morning-- MOST writers already do this. But, if you dedicate some time in the morning, while the family is asleep, you will make your goal!

3. Give yourself a break-- I know. How can I give myself a break, if I'm supposed to be sticking to the goal? You can compromise. You can still engage in the holidays; just make sure that you make up the work that you missed.

We all know that during the holidays, even with the BEST of intentions, we are going to veer off of our writing goals. But, there are a few things that you can do to survive during the upcoming holiday season!

1. Make time to write. If you hit your daily goal, at the end of the week,  get yourself a gift!

2. Find a different place to write-- Anywhere. As long as it's not your usual place.

3. Book an appointment in your calendar for writing time. Make it just as important as everything else you're doing during the holidays.

Especially during the holidays, when there are sooo many distractions; maybe we can give you a few 'prompts' that will get you on your way.

1. Give yourself a writing challenge-- This is a lot of fun! What you do is,  give yourself 5 minutes to think about a great title. I know what your thinking... "Bobbie D. how can I take only five minutes to create a winning title for a story?" Well, THAT'S THE CHALLENGE! See if you can do it. If you can, then-- add to the challenge. Start from that title, and create your story!

2. Openers and closers-- Write a group of great opening lines. And do the same with closing lines. You can get sooo creative with this. Then, you fill in the blank space in between!

Just a few thoughts to get you on your way, and keep you on track of your writing goals during the holidays.

If you are looking for an opportunity to write about the holidays, but you need a few ideas-- well, I think I have a few good ideas that can help you on your way.

1.  Write about what YOU think it would be like to spend the holidays in another country. Would you like the weather? The traditions/customs? The food?

2.  Write about what the best holiday present you've ever gotten was.

3. Write about your favorite holiday foods. I'm sure it will make you hungry!

4. Write about where you like to shop during the holidays. What do you like about it? What do you usually find?

5. Write about a holiday tradition that you don't understand. You may have to do some research on this one.

Keep these ideas in mind. And this will keep you connected to the holidays, and keep you writing during the holidays. AND it's something fun!

We made it! It’s the beginning of 2023! Isn’t that AMAZING!? In such a crazy, uncertain world, it’s great to know that we have one more chance to get things right. As we launch into this new year (with both eyes open), we are continually learning about this thing called “LIFE”. So many things to do, see and learn. Let’s go into this year with an open mind, a refreshed view and an open heart.

In the month of January, there are a lot of things that are happening on the calendar. It’s National soup, hot tea, slow cooking, oatmeal AND mentoring month! With all of those things going on, I’m sure that you can find a way to celebrate them safely.

Let’s bring in this new year with a fresh attitude, fresh mind and forgiveness in our heart. It’s the PERFECT way to jump into the new year!

Book Publishing Trends in 2022 and Where The Trends are Going in 2023

There were a lot of trends in the publishing game in 2022; audiobooks, BookTok, calls for diversity in books and stories…. It was a wide open, beautiful pot of publishing goodness! But, what lies ahead in 2023? As we publishers look toward the new year, here are a few things that you, as a writer, want to be aware of in 2023:

1. Calls for diversity are STILL in high demand! Many of us are looking for more representation in ALL areas, LGBTQIA+. People of color, women’s stories– just to name a few. And this isn’t only in books for adults and young adults/teens. But, in children’s books as well.
2. Book prices will increase. And with that in mind, if you are close to finishing your story, maybe push yourself to get it out there. This is the time!
3. Audiobooks will continue to become more popular-2017 seemed to be the time when audiobooks made a huge splash on the scene. They have been doing REALLY well in the marketplace. As we watch the trends move, we see the audiobook getting better and better. 
4. Ebooks are also on the rise- they aren’t as popular as audiobooks. But, they ARE trending!  

Keep these things in mind as you navigate through this thing we call ‘publishing’.

Be Inspired Everyday....

I know that sometimes it's HARD to find inspiration. But, (and this is a BIG but) you found inspiration BEFORE the pandemic....you can surely find it now that things are slowing down. Find it in the song of the birds, the wind, your child's eyes, etc. 

PLEASE force yourself to find everyday inspiration and keep writing! 

Look at art magazines---In fact, you don't have to look at a magazine, you can look up pictures online.

So, find that 'thing' that speaks to you. Get inspired!

This is the day that I believe that most of us feel compelled to write! Write something of national importance. And with the interesting state of affairs ( at the time that I'm writing this post), it is VERY important to try and stay connected to the goal.

 Do You NEED a Literary Agent?

To answer your question, maybe? It depends on EXACTLY what you are trying to do. If you are trying to self publish, of course not. But, if you are trying to get published by a traditional publisher, it would be helpful to get a literary agent. However, you could contact the publisher yourself, if you wanted to. But, you may want to consider having a lawyer standing by; just to make sure that you are getting the best deal. 

As a publisher, we are bombarded with entries every day. And sometimes, it's hard to sift through. But, if a literary agent is representing you, it helps put your book to the front of the pile. But, I like it when the author contacts us personally. It means that they are willing to "fight" for themselves. And that they are passionate about their work; not relying on someone else to fight for them. (That's my own opinion.)

Whatever you decide to do, believe in your work. You'll get there. I believe in you!

To be honest,1 in 1,000. It's scary to think about that. But, unless you've written,  "The Color Purple" or, 'Wonder', you may not get your story published.However, if you are REALLY interested in getting your name out there, there are ways to get your name out in front of people. 

1. Self Publishing- I know it's not a traditional way of publishing. But, it's a way of getting your story in the hands of the consumer. 
2. A newer publisher- Newer publishers may be a little more lenient, and more willing to listen to your ideas.

These are a few things that you may want to consider. Pray about it. You'll find the best path for you. 

Don't ask, "Should I keep writing?". Just Write!

So, what you need to ask yourself is, "Do I enjoy the process? Do I see myself doing this long- term? Would I do this if I didn't get paid?" If your answer is YES to all of these questions, you were meant to write! So, keep on writing. Keep on trying. Keep on gaining the knowledge that you need to become successful; but, if you don't make a TON of money, don't be disappointed. It's okay. Some REALLY talented people haven't made a TON of money. Do what makes you happy, and you will be successful.

Embarking on the writing scene is an overwhelming, scary thing! But, I do have a few tips that can help you on your way!

1. You MUST keep your portfolio up to date...ALWAYS! If you are trying to be a legit writer, ans someone takes a chance on you, you can't come to them with writings from when you were in college twenty years ago--and you hadn't written anything since. You want to give off the BEST you that there is! Fresh, new ideas, (even if they are based in a time long ago) are what you need.

2. Educate yourself-- It's very important that you as a 'professional writer' keep educating yourself; take a couple of classes, virtual learning, whatever it takes to keep your skills sharp.

If you have the gumption, maybe teach a few classes. 

3. Make social media your friend-- You MUST get your name AND stories out there! Utilize these outlets to make a name for yourself.

4. Make connections in the community-- A great way to become part of the community is to try to become part of different literary/art boards . This way, you can get together with like minded individuals who know what you are going through and are willing to help.

Secrets to ADVANCED Writing....

There are many secrets to writing; secrets that will take a lifetime to get through...lol! But, there are so many things that you need to know, so you can look your best! 

If you consider yourself to be an ADVANCED WRITER, there are things that you may want to check about your writing...just to make SURE that you are where you THINK you are.

1. Parallel Construction

2. Avoid WEAK words 

3. Avoid Dangling Modifiers

4. Avoid being redundant

5. Make pronouns clear

6. Works on the length of your sentences

7. Do NOT over use parenthesis

If you can look at your work and see that you have done/ or not done thee things, all is well. You ARE an ADVANCED WRITER! Congratulations!

Apostrophes.... What are They? What is Their Purpose?

So, there is an elephant in the room....I know YOU see it. And as a WRITER, I KNOW it REALLY gets to you, huh? We see it on social media ALL the time; friends and family using the "apostrophe" WRONG!!!

I just HAVE to say this, when you are writing something, ANYTHING that will be read by ANYONE other than YOU, please CHECK first! Then, check again. Then, check ONE MORE TIME....

I've noticed that when people are writing their posts on social media, they have been using the apostrophe like so.....

"We had a great day out and about today! Here is a picture of us; the Cubbage's!" I'm sorry. This is NOT grammatically correct. If I am talking about one person in the Cubbage family, that would be fine. For example, "I gave Mrs. Cubbage's gift to her husband." THAT is correct. But, if we are talking about the Cubbage family, you would say, "I have a gift for the Cubbages."

I hope that this can clear things up. If you have ANY questions on HOW to use the apostrophe, feel free to ask someone. And if you don't have anyone to ask, ask ME! I'm happy to help.

During the Winter months, it’s difficult to be a writer. You can’t really go anywhere to get your creative juices flowing; something that gets that feeling, moving inside of you. Here are a few tips that can help you beat those, “Winter blues”.

Be creative in other ways. Do some artwork, do some baking (but, not too much), anything that can get those creative juices flowing is just what you need.

Exercise. I know. It’s cold. It’s wet. It’s snowing. It’s raining….But, those are just excuses. You can do it! Get up and MOVE!

Try to get out! You can always go for a walk, or go in the backyard. Go for a drive.  Anything to get you out of the house. 

I hope that these things can help you get through the Winter. And remember, Spring is on the way!

Do You Have a Notebook Handy?

Always carry a notebook or some way to record your thoughts. Your short-term memory can only retain information for a short amount of time. If you do not write down your thoughts, you can lose those great ideas forever.

As a writer, it’s hard to edit your own work. It’s EXTREMELY possible that you WILL miss obvious mistakes and problems. So, when you are finished writing, hand your work over to someone who is an objective reader; and (most importantly) a professional editor. A professional editor can check to see if you have grammatical errors or holes in your plot. And they can tell you how to improve your masterpiece! Writing is hard; you just have to keep working until you get it right!

Revisions are Needed

What makes revisions tough is that with your draft, you have to think about the story as a whole; you MUST think about EVERYTHING! 

How does the piece look as a whole? 

How about individual pieces of the story? 

How about the characters? 

Are the characters believable? How is their point of view? 

Are the words spelled right? 

Does it flow? 

Is it moving in the right direction?

These are just a few things to think about, during your revisions.

The best thing to do is get ready for revisions from the beginning, and it will not seem so bad.

Always forge ahead! You’ve got this!

Many new writers make this mistake. Heck, many "seasoned writers" make this mistake.  "I'm about to sell a  million units! I can't be bothered with this job!" Unfortunately, this WILL NOT happen.  But, I’ve always been a big believer in maintaining a day job. You MUST pay the bills. But, you can maintain a day job, or jobs and do something you LOVE on the side. Dropping your day job to write a book can sometimes lead to a worst-case scenario. Debt, financial worries and what's worse, you could find that your first book may not be the one to start your career as a working writer.

So, until you can make SURE that this is making a real financial difference in your wallet...or, it's making you enough money that working your day job is getting in the way? Keep that job!

I don't know how many times I've said that I enjoy writing nonfiction--Because for me, it's what I like writing about (and reading) the most! But, writing nonfiction may not be your 'thing'. And that's okay. However, to continue to hone your skills, you MUST practice; practice, practice! So, try dabbling in writing something outside of your comfort zone. I've written 3 cookbooks; even though I LOVE nonfiction! But, should I not write cookbooks because I love nonfiction? Absolutely not!

That's the difference between a GOOD writer, and one of the GREATEST! It will truly make a difference.

How to Write a Fiction Novel

I know…What a silly question….lol! However, there are quite a few things that YOU should do when it comes to writing a fiction novel. Here are a few tips that you should follow when writing fiction.

Is your story moving properly? Or is it a snoozer? Yes! (Something I always say is “have someone else read your writing.)If your story moves you, that’s one thing. You’re the one who wrote it. But, if you can move a close friend or family member with your writing, you are well on your way.

Transformations. Everything in the story SHOULD change; the characters, the world around them, etc. So, you should think about all of these things….ALL the way to the end. 

Make your story exciting, surprising and satisfying. (That is a given.)

Check your grammar. This is what I ALWAYS say… EDIT. EDIT.. EDIT!!! 

These tips will get you well on your way to writing a FANTASTIC fiction novel!

I know….Bobbie. What kind of a question is that?!? Well, you’d be surprised at how many writers couldn’t explain what a sentence is. 

There are soooo many sources that can explain this question. However, Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary includes the following definition for sentence: “A word, clause, or phrase or a group of clauses or phrases forming a syntactic unit which expresses an assertion, a question, a command, a wish, an exclamation, or the performance of an action, that in writing usually begins with a capital letter and concludes with appropriate end punctuation, and that in speaking is distinguished by characteristic patterns of stress, pitch, and pauses.” With that being said, keep this explanation/definition in your mind as you write. This will not only help you with your writing; as well as help you to understand proper English. Okay! Go and work on some sentences in your novel…..then, write!

Bobbie D. What does THAT mean? Well, when you begin to write your “Great American Novel”, you want to make sure that your story is interesting. What I mean is… whatever you are interested in, write about it! If you are interested in horseback riding, and you know a lot about it; you’re passionate about it, write about it! And the more interested you are in ‘horseback riding’ the more interesting it will be to your readers. This will give you longevity in the writing world. And that’s what it’s all about, right?

One of the things I like to stress to new writers (and experienced writers) is editing your work. It is SOOO important that YOU have a hand in editing your own words. How can someone else tell you what you were thinking when you were writing your piece? So, I’m always saying something about making sure that you have a hand in editing your work. But, another important thing that you need to do is make sure that when you are hit with writer’s block, don’t fret. Put your writing aside for a little while and let it rest. Distraction Free Writing

There are so many distractions around us. Believe it or not, it took me at least 5 attempts to try to finish this tip…lol!! But, you have to do what you have to do to do that "thing" that you love. 

With that being said, here are a few things that you can do to get your writings done– or at least…started.

1. Schedule writing time. I know that in this day and age, many of us find it hard to schedule time for things that we want to do. But, to be an effective writer, you MUST try to do this. Try to schedule this time when the family is gone. Or, while everyone is busy. I’m sure if you look hard enough, you can find that time.
2. Turn off devices- Another VERY important thing that needs to be done. That way, you can tap into your inner creativity.  
3. Just write- Simply put. Just…write…. Write whatever is on your heart and in your mind.
4. Use online tools- This is very helpful. You can use online tools to help your writings in so many ways.

Stay Focused

Like yesterday’s tip, (Distraction free writing), today’s tip goes with it. Staying focused. 

Staying focused is hard to do with so many life distractions. When you feel as though you are losing focus, try this. Think about how awesome it's going to be when you reach your goal. Think about the feeling you get when you complete something. Isn't that a feeling worth having? Absolutely!!

You need to be focused on your writings, so you can be an effective writer. It’s just that simple. Try to stay focused on your story and your goals.

Keeping with the theme of "checking yesterday's tip" lol!! I'm going to add that you STAY MOTIVATED!! 

It doesn't matter if your family doesn't understand what you are doing. It doesn't matter if your friends don't support you. (It would be great if they did give you the support you deserve.) But, if they don't, you MUST stay motivated! If this is something that you want to do. Eventually, they will get on board. Especially, when they see how important this is to you. 

Stay positive. Stay motivated! They'll see what the end game is.

We are known for great food, three (actually four) rivers, many bridges and of course, PROFESSIONAL SPORTS!!! We shut things down for our Penguins, Pirates and of course, the STEELERS!!! Sundays, Mondays and Tursdays in the Fall, in the Steel City are AMAZING! If you LOVE football, believe me, this is the place to be. Church services are cut short so the congregation can get home to get ready for football! LOL! What’s SPECIAL about YOUR town?

How long does it REALLY Take to Get a Book Published?

As a new or up and coming writer, it’s exciting to think about having your first book published! To actually have YOUR book in YOUR hands...it’s very liberating! But, if you are actually trying to get your book published through a Publishing Company, how long does it REALLY take for your book to get published?  

In most cases, once your book is accepted, it could take anywhere from nine months to maybe two years! During this time, you must remember that you must practice patience. The world today is filled with people trying to rush through everything. If you want something hot to eat, you use a microwave--zip, zap! It’s done in seconds! If you are looking for information, you can pick up your cell phone and GOOGLE anything you want! But, in publishing a book, it doesn’t happen that way. Not only does your book have to go through several processes, (editing, scanning, marketing, promoting, etc.)  but in most cases, you aren’t the only client. So, you just might have to wait. I know it’s hard to do; but, you have to. 

Some companies can get your book finished before this time. If so, you are VERY lucky! But, if you are a person who wants to get your book out ASAP, you may want to consider going the ‘self-publishing’ way. It will be finished, in your time, and you don’t have to wait….other than waiting for the self publishing company to print your books. It’s completely up to you. 

Publishing and Patience

The publishing process is long and hard. You have to be patient, and you have to be respectful. You have to be patient because it’s not going to be finished overnight. You have to be respectful because the publishing house/company has more than one client. 

Some publishing houses have you sign a lot of paperwork before you get started. Some may have you sign it during the process. And some may not have a contract at all. But, regardless of what the company does, you must remember that you sought out the publishing company. And  “people” run the company. Not to mention, they can deem if you are going to be an honor to work with, or a hindrance to their company. And NO ONE wants to deal with a troublesome client. 

Remember, the best way to catch bees is with honey,  not vinegar.

I had some really great conversations this weekend; and one was with my sister. Not that my sister and I don't already have great conversations. But, this one was very enlightening. We were talking about a situation and she said, “Don’t expect YOU from other people.” And that IS so true. So, I thought about that; “Don’t expect YOU from other people.” And I thought that this would be a great day to do “Great advice prompts”.

1. You have a ‘friend’ who you have been a support system for years. You realize that this friend doesn’t and hasn’t supported anyone you know, ever. What do you do?

2. You are disappointed in someone. Do you tell them? Let it go? Or let THEM go?

3. Are you a confrontational person? 

4. Do YOU expect YOU from other people? If so, write about it.

Okay! There's a great start to get your mind flowing. Write a masterpiece! Good luck!

Church Writing

When you are trying to become a ‘writer’, you forget that there are sooo many types of writing. One form of writing is “Church Writing”. When I say, “Church Writing”, I mean sermons, newsletters, bulletins, social media, etc. There is a LOT of writing in the church. 

If you feel that you want to get a jumpstart to your writing experience, ask the head of your church if you could start a newsletter. Maybe you can start a social media ministry in your church. (We did). Do what you can to get some solid experience.

It’s the middle of the week, and I’d like for you to take time to not only write, but to take time for yourself. After you are finished writing for the day, you should do something for yourself. Go for a walk, take a drive, stop for a treat. Take time to walk away from your projects for a day or two; taking a break from it can help breathe new life into your work. And don’t forget to BREATHE…Just, Breathe….

Sunday is National Paperback book day!  I hope that you had the chance to enjoy your FAVORITE paperback book; found a quiet place and a nice time to sit and enjoy!
